Retaining Wall Project Budget < $2000

The Brief

A courtyard area in a sandy beach-side location had a problem area that needed addressing.  As a small outdoor courtyard, it was the only area the property had for outdoor entertaining. With the property being let for holiday-makers it was an area that was frequently used, and was also the first thing you saw as you exited the rear door of the building. The retaining wall was still functioning, however it had rotted badly in some areas and was crumbing at the top.  The posts were still very solid and were in no danger of giving way, however, the wall and what it retained had become an eyesore.

The Solution

Build a parallel wall, level and square that added strength to the existing wall and looks good.

  • Gain access for materials and tools through the rear fence.
  • Excavate around the existing wall, assess for connection points and stabilising posts and measure for new posts and rails
  • Cut and fit support posts between the old wall and new.  Secure supporting posts and fit horizontal rails to hidden posts. Line the new wall with black plastic to ensure adequate drainage and backfill with drainage gravel.
  • Top fill the wall with Cyprus chippings, tidy the area and refit the fence panels.

The Result

The 200×75 treated sleepers provide a striking result, especially being levelled perfectly to the pavers, providing a level top rail.  The new wall effectively hides the old wall, is much more solid and retains slightly more of the soil bank.  Lastly, it looks great!!

The customer was very happy with the end result and have referred us for future work.
